Brazil has established an extense network of protected areas which actually covers more than 2 million sqkm (about 25% of the national territory). It is divided almost equally between protected natural areas or conservation units (unidades de conservação) and indigenous land (terras indígenas). About 2/3 of Brazil´s conservation units are located in the Mata Atlântica.
